BookWise HIV and Aids Clinic Management System trial successfully completed

January 2009 - VPPS Africa is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed a trial of its BookWise HIV and Aids Clinic Management System with the ALAFA NGO in Maseru, Lesotho and that the system was implemented and went live on the 1st January 2009.

Virtualpurple Professional Services was asked to provide the ALAFA NGO with a ARV Clinical System that would manage the treatment programmes of some 1,500 employees of the Textile industry in Lesotho. The system will be implemented at all GP practices where patients who are on the ALAFA programme are treated and the number of employees that will be on treatment over the next three years is estimated to be 15,000.

The overall purpose of the system is to ensure that patients receive optimal care and treatment from their private doctors or factory clinics.

Specific objectives of the ARV Patient Management System:

Effective HIV treatment programs require high adherence to medication, attention to potential drug toxicity and continuing diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic infections.

Setting up the patient data management system

  • Involves setting up an electronic file per patient (demographic and clinical data)
  • The patient database will allow for the review of progress and adherence to standards for each individual patients and patient cohorts (per doctor; per factory)
  • Efficient monitoring adherence to antiretroviral therapy, follow up visits, pill refills, counselling sessions,
Laboratory data to monitor ART efficacy and those that need to be initiated or regimen changed
  • Available data base will provide information on the survival, the changes in immunological and virological markers for HIV-infected apparel workers in the treatment program.
  • This data base will provide insight into the effectiveness of ALAFA interventions and designing interventions that are relevant.

In brief the ARV System was developed to addresses the following:

  • Adherence to national and international policy guidelines
  • Quality assurance of private GP providers
  • Detection of treatment defaulters
  • Number of patients lost to follow up
  • Lag time between testing, registration, initial assessment and start of treatment
